Rich snippets have been in use since May of 2009. Originally rolled out in two formats - reviews and people - the snippets allow search engine optimization (SEO) professionals to add specialized HTML tags to information on their web pages, which is then indexed and displayed according to the new format. Reviews might be set to display ratings and key sentences on the SERP, while people might do the same with contact information and personal details.

Google′s example of rich event snippets was a SERP entry for the Filmore Theater in New York, showing links to subpages for upcoming events along with the relevant dates. (The Hip Hop Karaoke Championship, it seems, will occur on Friday January 29.)

Experts say that Google′s expanding retinue of search add-ons have made the task of search engine optimization (SEO) more complicated, but also provided more opportunities for strong content to find a wider audience.
